Happy August to all, from the tiny team at Well Met! It’s still hot where we are, and as we put the finishing touches to this month’s issue we’re aware of steam emerging from our ears. Nevertheless we have a cool frog and a super-chill list of contributors for you, with all our thanks as usual. And we’re very happy to have a newcomer! A very well-met welcome to David Ehrenman. The prompt-if-you-want for this month’s issue was ‘Summer Holiday’, and this has resulted in quite a trip! Even where poets preferred to send something on a different theme, or where the useless editor forgot to mention the theme (oops, sorry!), we have an overall feeling of travel, which we hope our readers will enjoy.
It’s a fruity-fresh beginning, leading happily into hats and hooves, hooray. Next, there’s a very lively Fall and Resurrection of Icarus, with the help of Tom o’Bedlam, before we land in a couple of wells, complete with amphibian inhabitants. Ascending from these subterranean settings, we come across both treasures and tribulations in our next two wanderings around Poetry World.
Saint-Malo and Sydney are the subsequent stops, followed by a stay in Sweden to familiarise ourselves with a new poetic form! We then fly to Florida, for a sad but brilliant ballad from Pensacola and a super sonnet inspired by the controlled burns that take place in the Everglades sometimes.
A Nordic seascape awaits for the third part of the journey, accompanied by anticipation of Autumn, something we’re awaiting eagerly here! A very well met moment at the Blarney Stone is next, followed by a trip back in time to childhood and a granddaughter’s third birthday. Finally, we head out by boat on a mysterious excursion…
