What lovely little crannies full
Of memories from grannies (all
Ensconced in careful cabinets)
Unlock by stories; who forgets
Has missed his chance to learn begats,
Inheritance leave not to chance!
Despite adventures decades long,
These artefacts are small—but strong.

David’s notes: “‘A Treasure Box’ indulges my love for the iambic tetrameter of the eighteenth century. I arranged the poem in eight lines to ‘square’ the eight syllables in each line and neatly form the titular ‘Treasure Box.’ I wrote this poem while caring for my grandparents as I realized how little stuff is in their two-bedroom apartment, considering their fascinating lives spent building dams and bridges in three different continents, sailing the Great Loop on North America’s Atlantic coast, and dancing jigs well into their eighties.“
