making peace
betwixt two drunks
violently
slapping mosquitoes

red cliffs strewn
with coral fossils
awed I lost
my father’s gun

Before Apocalypse
breathe deep—inhale
the stone and ichor
—stare out upon
the horizon—filled
with forming storms

After the Fallout
a crow feeds her nestlings
—mother earth
hasn’t noticed
man’s old absence

Ethan’s notes: “These four short poems are part of various experiments I have been doing with the goal of finding new ways to represent the Japanese haiku and tanka forms in English. In these, I am using two beat lines.”
