Legacy

Jared Carter

A place not far, in the old woods,
         that could keep out—
Though sometimes in—what would
         without a doubt

Have mattered once. The rest of all
         that first stood there
Is gone. What’s left is one long wall
         of mostly square

And weathered stones, stacked in dry tiers,
         capped by a row
Of leaning slabs, that through the years
         have not let go.
