Wayside

Jared Carter

A turn-off, where the highway’s bend
         has cut straight through
A grove of maples. Toward the end,
         a pathway to

This older place—wrought-iron fence
         and obelisk
With rows of names. There was a sense,
         once, that the risk

Was worth the effort. Now, the sway
         of trees, wind-blown,
And letters nearly worn away
         along the stone.
